Istanbul is one of the world’s great cities and the only one that spans two continents. With a population of 13 million people it is the second largest city in Europe and has a history dating back around three thousand years. It was the capital of the Roman Empire for a millennium before becoming the centre of Islamic culture, the capital of the Ottoman Empire for a further 500 years. Uniquely situated, Istanbul literally bridges the continents of Asia and Europe which are divided by the magnificent Bosphorus Straight, the city’s most distinctive geographical feature. This enormous body of water is lined with some of the most historic and awe-inspiring architecture anywhere on the planet. In many ways the famous Bosphorus Bridge, spanning over one kilometer, is a symbol of what makes Istanbul such a truly remarkable place. The city itself is a living bridge connecting east and west, the ancient and the modern, the material and the unseen. There could be no more appropriate location than Istanbul to host such a cultural and spiritual exchange program. Muslim for a Month takes great delight in welcoming you to one of the world’s great cultural melting pots, a city where history is alive and the future is being born.
