Beginning with the basics introduction to Islam and looking at the pillars of the religion, the course also goes into detail about the historical context Islam was born into and investigates the critical subject of Qu'ranic interpretation. The history of 6th century Arabia is considered in some detail as is the rapid growth of Islam and the evoliution into the Ottoman empire. Islamic law, jurisprudence and the role of sharia is examined in the modern context and applied to various issues occuring in western nations. Furthermore the various Sufi schools of thought are presented with an in-depth look into the life and works of the Sufi saint Mevlana Rumi. After each presentation there is time for questions and answers and often a lively discussion ensues.
